James was part of seven summer field recording teams, supervising five of
these teams, which documented nationally significant structures
throughout the United States.  Among these projects were the lighthouse
and lifesaving station on the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan, Fort Sumter
National Monument in South Carolina, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in
Birmingham, Alabama, and Enston Home in Charleston, South Carolina.

In addition, he had several extensions on projects, which included a set of
annotated historical drawings for the San Antonio mission chain in Texas
and a historic structures report for Fort Sumter National Monument.  The
study he did on the subsidence of the structure was published in the
Cultural Resources Magazine of the NPS.

These documents have been placed on permanent record in the Library of
Congress.
